Mbuyu Biotech (Pty) Ltd is a joint venture between the Biotechnology Partnership and Development (BioPAD), and the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) through its Biosciences unit. The company aims to build and exploit a portfolio of intellectual property and technology in the Biosciences domain.  Partnering and licensing form a core component of Mbuyu’s strategy.

Mbuyu Biotech was originally founded by Bioventures, a specialist biotechnology venture capital fund and the CSIR in 2003.

In 2006, BioPAD replaced Bioventures as a partner to the CSIR.

BioPAD is a Biotechnology Regional Innovation Centre established by the Department of Science and Technology in South Africa. It is mandated to boost the development of biotechnology in the Gauteng region by brokering partnerships between researchers, entrepreneurs, business, government and other stakeholders. The goal is to promote innovation and create sustainable biotechnology business in support of South Africa’s needs.
